| The term 'mass media' is known to everyone. Daily we consult the media sources to learn the latest domestic and world news, find necessary information, to entertain or to listen to the weather forecast. The importance of the media today is huge. The media mould and form buying decisions, feature new goods and services, educate and make us think. Mass media play a large role in shaping and reflecting public opinion, connecting people and the world. Mass media strongly influence society, since it can reach a wider audience. They consist of four primary sources: TV, press, radio and the Web. Everyday millions of magazines and newspapers are published worldwide. The list of them seems unlimited. There are various national and local papers, dailies and weeklies, quality newspapers that cater for the better educated readers and popular papers that sell to a far larger readership. Some papers cover mainly politics, financial and commercial issues; while others cover upon 'human interest stories'. The advent of radio made it possible for a larger audience of people to have access to the latest news and information. We ordinarily turn on the radio when driving a car to listen to news bulletins and reports presented live at the scene. Listeners are particularly much into call-in chat-shows and music charts. According to estimates, the vast majority of people consider TV their principal source of news. Our everyday life is frequently planned according to the program schedule. We switch it on to watch our favorite series and chat-shows, to view newly released movies, music videos and news programs. While TV broadcasts are scheduled, the Web allows us to have access to information and entertainment 24/7. Being both the video and audio source of information, the Web contains large databanks of information in all languages. It is well-known for the selection of opinions presented, large collections of music and films, e-encyclopedias designed to ease the search on the Internet, e-books and websites of papers and magazines. Life without the media would be boring and limited. Nonetheless, 'addiction' to some sources of amusement, such as viewing TV and searching on the Internet for hours, can badly influence well-being and interpersonal communication. |
